Strategies
Not all seniors will desire or have the capacity to afford the same type of housing. Many seniors hope to remain in their current residences but will require updates to accommodate changing mobility and cognitive abilities. Other seniors wish to either downsize or utilize less space in their current homes. Lower incomes may necessitate the move to lower cost housing options. Providing multiple housing options is the key to a successful senior housing approach.
The following section provides an overview of strategies to help communities achieve the five approaches for senior housing. Although listed alphabetically, many of the strategies are related, but with variations that require different implementations. Communities can benefit from gaining an understanding of the full grouping of strategies to understand which would work best for their community.
Strategy groupings include:
- Accessory Dwelling Units, Micro Apartments, Mini/Tiny Homes
- Adaptive Reuse, Remodeling
- Co-Living, Housing Cooperatives, Matchmaking
